Fort Worth Star-Telegram from Fort Worth, Texas (2024)

a a a a a a a a a a a Maureen Norris, 76, benefactor of retarded BY BILL VERHINES Fort Worth Star-Telegram AMARILLO. Maureen Norris knew first- hand of the special attention mentally retarded children needed. Her son, Donnie Norris, was born mentally retarded. This personal experience and knowledge led her to devote part of her life to help better the care of mentally retarded children, which was a neglected care area in the late 1940s when these concerns began to surface and direct her life. Mrs.

Norris' concern for the special care needs of mentally retarded children led her to the Fort Worth Children's Opportunity Center, a center for mentally retarded children. "The name of the center was derived from the mentally retarded children's lack of opportunity at that time," said James Norris, her husband. Mrs. Norris died Wednesday at an Amarillo nursing home after a long illness. She was 76.

Funeral will be at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow at Greenwood Funeral Home in Fort Worth. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park. Mrs. Norris was born in Dumas in the Panhandle, where she was a member of a pioneer family.

John D. Vurnett, her grandfather, had been one of the early sheriffs in Dumas, the county seat of Moore County. She moved to Fort Worth in 1945. Donnie was born mentally retarded in 1948. Mrs.

Norris received emotional support and practical care tips from Frances Polansky, who also was the mother of a mentally retarded child. Mrs. Norris and Mrs. Polansky in the early 1950s began to see the need of a center to care for the special needs of mentally retarded children in the Fort Worth area. Many of these children were being neglected at that time.

"They started talking to lawyers, pediatricians and other professional people in Fort Worth about the need for such a center," Mrs. Norris' husband said. As a result, the Fort Worth Children's Opportunity Center was established in the middle 1950s. Mrs. Norris solicited financial and volunteer help for the center until the middle 1960s when Donnie died.

"She was very devoted to the children. By this drive, she was able to successfully enlist the help of others," her husband said. Mrs. Norris often wept "sincere" tears when she discussed the finanical needs of the center to businessmen in the community. Detecting her obvious sincerity, they would donate money to the center, said her husband.

The center now is financially underwritten by the United Way of Tarrant County. Her involvement in the community also made Mrs. Norris a good source of the "comings and goings" of Fort Worth residents. She wrote a column for West Side Post by that name from the middle 1950s to the early 1960s. The column included the names of and facts about people moving to Fort Worth and those moving away from the area.

She also included information about social activities. "She loved Fort Worth and thought it was a nice city," said her husband. Mrs. Norris moved to Amarillo in 1981, where she previously had lived and worked as an operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone for eight years.
