Outdoors

Basic Kayaking Courses: 10 a.m. Sundays, July 7 and 21, Tuscarora State Park. Kayaks, paddles and personal flotation devices will be provided. Maximum weight capacity is 275 lbs. Sign up prior to the event at 570-467-2506 or in person at the park office. No online or fax registration. Each participant can send a donation check of $10 payable to the PA Parks and Forest Foundation. Class will be canceled in inclement weather. Limited space. If you have your own equipment, you may join for $3 per person. Meet at the park visitor center. Each child must be accompanied by an adult and be 12 or older.

Canoe and Kayak Rental Concession: Times: 11 a.m.-7 p.m. The last rental is at 6 p.m. All boats must be returned by 7. Located at the canoe launch near the Sweet Arrow Lake Clubhouse. Canoes, kayaks, rowboats, $10/hour per boat; canoes and rowboats seat up to three, kayaks seat one. PFD and paddles supplied. Rentals available Saturdays, Sundays, July Fourth and Labor Day. First-come, first-served. Rentals will be made if conditions permit and staff is available.

Fish for Free: Tuesday, July 4, Sweet Arrow Lake County Park, Pine Grove. Fishing permitted without a license. All other regulations still apply.

Hike: 9:45 a.m., Thursday, July 4, explore the mountain behind Locust Lake State Park and visit Silver Creek Fire Tower. The hike is 5 miles and moderate in difficulty. Meet at the visitor parking lot at Locust Lake State Park located before the contact station. Bring a lunch and your dog. All pets must be leashed and get along with people and other pets. Shine only. Pre-register by calling Robin at 570-467-2506.

Island Fireworks: 4 p.m., Saturday, July 6, Island Park, Schuylkill Haven. Food, music folloowed by fireworks, which are to begin at about 9:30.

Carnival: 5 p.m., Tuesday, July 9, to 11 p.m. Saturday, July 13, Pine Grove Hose, Hook & Ladder Fire Company, 1 Orchard St. Food, games, rides and entertainment.

Yuengling Stars & Stripes Celebration: 11 a.m., Saturday, July 13, downtown Pottsville. Concert by Lee Bryce.

Sensory Walk: Friday July 14, 2 p.m., Frog Hollow Nature Area, Friedensburg. All ages welcome, no pets.

Schuylkill Haven: The Schuylkill Haven Senior Citizens Organization and Senior Travelers meet Monday, July 8, at 6 p.m. at the Schuylkill Haven Senior Citizens Association Center, 340 Haven St. Final reservations and $5 payment for the members’ July 22 picnic can be made.

Senior Travelers: The Schuylkill Haven Senior Travelers are planning the following trips: Silver Birches in Hawley to see “Divalirious,” a one-woman show, Aug. 7. Dinner and a show. Arrive at 11 a.m., depart at 3:30 p.m.. Trip to Capitol in Harrisburg with lunch at Duke’s Restaurant Oct. 2. Capitol tour at 10:30 a.m., lunch from noon to 1:30. Kentucky trip, Sept. 16-20.
