Mobility
Excellent
Havoc Demon Hunter are known for their exceptional cleave damage through Ragefire and high passive survivability because of Soul Fragment and high amount of Leech.
Their toolkit includes powerful defensive abilities like Blur and Netherwalk, which enhance their survivability and allow them to stay in the fight longer than most other damage dealers.
However, like any specialization, Havoc Demon Hunter have their weaknesses. One notable drawback is the amount of damage you lose when holding any of your short cooldowns for specific phases in a fight or for adds. This trade-off makes it challenging to maintain optimal single target damage therefore it is important to think about fights and the important phases before starting the fight.
Talents
Patch 11.0 - The War Within
Havoc Demon Hunter
Ragefire
When to use this Spec
Use this spec in any Mythic+ Key, this is a perfect mix between good single target/priority damage and high sustained AoE damage, also every utility ability is talented as this significantly helps you timing keys and helping your group.
Gameplay Altering Talents
Discover all talents that significantly alter your gameplay within the Spec and Class Talent trees. This section gives a concise overview of these talents and their applications but for a more detailed look check out the Rotation and Deep Dive sections below.
Spec Tree
- Ragefire
- Accumulates damage done by your Immolation Aura and makes you explode in a small circle around you after Immolation Aura runs out.
- Initiative
- Hitting a target before it hits you increases your critical strike chance by 10%, this is reset on every hostile target by casting Vengeful Retreat.
- Inertia
- After casting Immolation Aura your next Fel Rush empowers you, increasing all your damage done by 18%.
- Essence Break
- Does massive damage in a frontal cone and amplifies the damage done of your Chaos Strike and Blade Dance to all targets hit.
- A Fire Inside
- Immolation Aura has a 25% chance to not cost a charge.
- Accelerated Blade , Furious Throws, Soulscar
- This talent synergizes with your Tier Set and makes Throw Glaive deal significant damage.
Class Tree
- Darkness
- This group-wide defensive cooldown creates a zone of Darkness at the Havoc Demon Hunter's location, granting all allies within it a 15% chance to avoid all damage from incoming attacks.
- The Hunt
- Strong offensive Cooldown that does gives a major dot to your target and every other target you charge through (capped at 5).
Rotation
Patch 11.0 - The War Within
Havoc Demon Hunter
Tier Set
- 2-Set: Blade Dance automatically triggers Throw Glaive on your primary target for 100% damage and each slash has a 50% chance to Throw Glaive an enemy for 35% damage.
- 4-Set: Throw Glaive reduces the remaining cooldown of The Hunt by 2.0 sec, and The Hunt's damage over time effect lasts 6 sec longer.
The current Havoc Demon Hunter Tier Set revolves around your Throw Glaive ability triggering when you use Blade Dance making it a major part of your damage breakdown. Additionally, it allows you to cast The Hunt more frequently which boosts your damage significantly if you use it on cooldown and spread the Damage over Time effect properly.
Single-Target
Opener Rotation
- The goal of the Havoc Demon Hunter opener is to get the most out of your Initiative, Inertia, Demonic and Essence Break window.
Priority List
This is a general priority you aim to maintain throughout the fight.
- Cast Immolation Aura if you are on 2 stacks or about to hit 2
- Cast Eye Beam on cooldown
- Cast Fel Rush if Unbound Chaos buff is up
- Cast Vengeful Retreat on cooldown
- Cast Essence Break on cooldown
- Cast The Hunt on cooldown
- Cast Death Sweep
- Cast Annihilation
- Cast Throw Glaive if Blade Dance is on cooldown and you are about to hit 2 stacks
- Cast Blade Dance
- Cast Chaos Strike
- Cast Sigil of Flame
- Cast Felblade
- Cast Fel Rush if everything else is on cooldown and you have no fury
Multi Target
Opener Rotation
- Below, you see an example of how your opener looks like using the recommended Multi-Target talent spec, the only difference here is to Fel Rush before the Eye Beam.
- Make sure to hit your targets with Essence Break after using Vengeful Retreat since it propels you back. You can angle yourself sideways to achieve this.
Priority List
- Cast Immolation Aura if you are on 2 stacks or about to hit 2
- Cast Fel Rush if Unbound Chaos buff is up
- Cast Eye Beam on cooldown
- Cast Vengeful Retreat on cooldown
- Cast Essence Break on cooldown
- Cast The Hunt on cooldown

- Cast Annihilation
- Cast Throw Glaive if Blade Dance is on cooldown and you are about to hit 2 stacks

Deep dive
Patch 11.0 - The War Within
Havoc Demon Hunter
Dead or Alive
The most important part of doing damage and being a useful part of your 5 man group is staying alive. With movement being a core part of your damage rotation you NEED to always be aware of your surroundings. Do not Fel Rush or Vengeful Retreat into frontal abilities or area of effect zones.
You cannot do damage while you are dead and neither can you stop abilities from going through.
Being able to execute the perfect rotation isn't going to help you if you are lying dead on the floor or if you need externals/healing that your tank would need otherwise.
Immolation Aura
Manage your Immolation Aura charges properly as it is the biggest portion of your damage breakdown in AoE scenarios. When you are about to overcap on charges but you don't have Fel Rush charges ready to spend on Inertia uptime just use your Immolation Aura charges and ignore Inertia.
Never overcap on Immolation Aura charges, no matter what!
Initiative Windows
Another important part of your damage is managing your Initiative windows properly. Remember that every single hostile enemy procs Initiative and Vengeful Retreat also resets it on EVERY hostile enemy.
You can optimize this by staying out of range of some enemies to procInitiative again later.
Haste ?!
Even though Haste Sims pretty poorly on paper, it is a great stat for multi-target scenarios as it smooths your gameplay out by a lot.
Haste increases the amount of Immolation Aura charges you have as it decreases the recharge time and helps with Fury generation as well as helping you fit more abilities into your Demonic windows.
Consider using 1-2 Howling Runes depending on the amount of Haste you currently have. Aim somewhere between 12-20% of Haste depending on your preference.
Understanding Mechanics
Rotational min-maxing is just one aspect of mastering a specialization, but there are numerous other key mechanics that influence your performance. Use the following guides to improve them.

Hackclaw's War-Band
- Kill Tricktotem first. Make sure you instantly swap to Hextrick Totems when they spawn.
- Use your interrupt whenever you can on Earth Bolt, and use Consume Magic on Greater Healing Rapids.
- You should hold Blur or Netherwalk for Marked for Butchery.
Treemouth
- Treemouth frequently spawns 4 Decaying Slimes, which makes this fight perfect for Havoc Demon Hunters,
- You also need to stop the Decaying Slimes from casting, Gushing Ooze. Use Chaos Nova and Sigil of Misery
Gutshot
- Do not get close to the Rotfang Hyenas! Use Chaos Nova or Sigil of Misery if they ever get near you.
Decatriarch Wratheye
- Focus the Rotburst Totem every time it comes up.
- Use Blur on Withered Eruption.
Trash Tips
- Hackclaw's War-Band area
- Use Chaos Nova or Sigil of Misery to stop Vicious Clawmangle, or Bone Bolt.
- Be ready to Disrupt whatever is needed in this area as there are a lot of dangerous casts.
- Treemouth's Area
- If you are playing a Fetid Rotsinger, be ready to kill Decay Totem when they spawn.
- Use Chaos Nova or Sigil of Misery to stop Summon Lashers.
Boss Tips
The Lost Dwarves
- Use Blur if you are targetted by Ricocheting Shield.
- Interrupt Defensive Bulwark whenever it's up.
Bromach
- Focus on killing Quaking Totems instantly. They spawn roughly every 40 seconds which is great timing for a Havoc Demon Hunter.
- The boss continuously summons adds, one of which has to be interrupted, thanks to these adds you always deal great damage to the Quaking Totems because the adds fuel your Ragefire.
- Rotate Blur and Darkness on the Quaking Totems.
Sentinel Talondras
- Use Blur if you get Earthen Shards, but use it late enough to cover Crushing Stomp as well.
Chrono-Lord Deios
- Use Blur in the intermission.
Trash Tips

- Rotate defensives on Shards of Stone.
The Raging Tempest
- Use Blur and Darkness during Electrical Storm.
- Soak orbs early in the fight to stack up Surge of Power quickly.
Teera and Maruuk
- Use Blur or Netherwalk on Gale Arrow. This is one of the hardest hitting abilities in all of Mythic+.
Balakar Khan
- Use Chaos Nova and Sigil of Misery on the adds in the intermission to stop their casts.
- Delay Blur and Netherwalk and use them if you are the target of either Iron Spear or Static Spear in Phase 1 or Phase 2.
Trash Tips
- Granyth area
- Use Chaos Nova or Sigil of Misery on Rally the Clan or Hunt Prey.
- Focus on killing Nokhud Lancemasters and interrupt their Disruptive Shout.
- Teera and Maruuk area
- Desecrated Ohunas cast Rotting Wind which is a very deadly spell. You can use Chaos Nova and Sigil of Misery, but try to stop it at the last second as they are coded so that the next one starts when the first one is about to finish, this way you can stop two at the same time.
- Balakar Khan area
- If you are playing Batak and Balara, Remember that Balaras Vehement Charge goes on the closest target, so make sure you bait it into a wall if you are the closest, or play from max melee range and let the tank handle it.
Boss Tips
Vexamus
- Mana Bomb does a lot of damage so you should use Blur or Netherwalk.
- At around 2 minutes into the fight there is an overlap of Mana Bomb and Arcane Fissure, make sure you have Blur or Netherwalk ready for it.
Overgrown Ancient
- You can hold Immolation Aura or Eye Beam if adds are about to spawn.
- Use Blur to mitigate Burst Forth's damage.
Crawth
- Deafening Screech does increasingly more damage each stack. For the first 2 hits you use nothing, for later ones you need to use Blur. If your group plays up to 4 Deafening Screeches you may need to Netherwalk or Metamorphosis immune on them higher key levels.
Echo of Doragosa
- Use Blur or Netherwalk if you get Energy Bomb.
- If you are at 3 stacks of Overwhelming Power, position yourself in a good way to drop Arcane Rift.
Trash Tips
- Vexamus area
- Look out for Spellbound Scepters casting Mystic Blast and use Chaos Nova or Sigil of Misery to stop them.
- Overgrown Ancient area
- Make sure to position properly to hit Fel Devastation and Ragefire on all targets.
- Try to stick to your tank so you don't clutter melee with more Detonation Seeds than necessary.
Boss Tips
Watcher Irideus
- Use Chaos Nova and Fel Eruption to stop the Boss adds.
Gulping Goliath
- Use Blur on Overpowering Croak.
- Use Chaos Nova or Sigil of Misery to stop the Curoius Swoglets.
Khajin the Unyielding
- Use Blur and Netherwalk when your healer is struggling.
Primal Tsunami
- Stack with other melees to stack the Infused Globule.
- Use Chaos Nova, Imprison, Sigil of Misery or Fel Eruption to stop the intermission adds from casting Inundate.
Trash Tips
- Watcher Irideus area
- Use Disrupt, Chaos Nova and Sigil of Misery to stop Expulse and Demoralizing Shout.
- Focus on killing the Containment Apparatuses.
- Khajin & Primal Tsunami area
- Use Blur for the Glacial Proto-Dragons Deep Chill, you can also remove the debuff with Vengeful Retreat.
- Stop Ice Shard to help your tank.
Boss Tips
Leymor
- Phial of Icy Preservation provides a lot of value in this fight. Explosive Brand and Consuming Stomp do massive damage.
Azureblade
- There is not much to this boss, interrupt and kill the Draconic Images.
- The intermission is a great time to use Blur and Darkness.
Telash Greywing
- Use Blur if you are targetted by Icy Devastator.
Umbrelskul
- At 75%, 50%, and 25% Umbralskul spawns Detonating Crystals and one Hardened Crystal. The latter one has an absorb shield that needs to be broken, while the shield persists it deals massive AoE damage to your group. Make sure you have Eye Beam and Essence Break for every spawn.
- Use Blur and Darkness for each of these Crystal phases if they are ready.
Trash Tips
- Azureblade area
- Interrupt Arcane Elementals Waking Bane and Ritual Seal Keepers Icy Bindings. You can also use stop such as Chaos Nova and Sigil of Misery
- Telash Greywing area
- Focus Drakonid Breakers, and use defensives on Shoulder Slam.
Boss Tips
Chargath, Bane of Scales
- Use Blur and Netherwalk during Fiery Focus. They happen roughly every 55 sec so rotate them accordingly.
Forgemaster Gorek
- If you use Blur just before the second hit of Might of the Forge it also covers the Blazing Aegis right after.
Magmatusk
- Rotate Blur and Netherwalk on Magma Eruption.
Trash Tips
- Chargath area
- Hold Eye Beam and Essence Break for when your group uses the chain.
- Watch out for the Qalashi Hunter's Bold Ambush. A random player gets targeted with a leap and receives a massive bleed. This ability targets the furthest player from the boss.
- Forgemaster Gorek area
- Lava Flares cast Melt which is a very dangerous spell that you need to interrupt or stop. Coordinate with your team when you want to use Chaos Nova and Sigil of Misery.
- Magmatusk area
- Disrupt Qalashi Thaumaturges Molten Core. Stop their Magma Conflagration after the initial cast finishes, otherwise they recast it immediately.
Boss Tips
Melidrussa Chillworn
- Chillstorm is the main mechanic of this fight. It happens too frequently for Havoc Demon Hunters to have defensives for each.
- During Frost Overload is the absolute best time to use Blur as there are whelplings you can AoE for extra healing.
Kokia Blazehoof
- Kokia casts Ritual of Blazebinding every 30 seconds, which spawns a Blazebound Firestorm. These adds need to be killed asap, Havoc Demon Hunter is very strong in this fight since Eye Beam and Essence Break line up almost perfectly for each set.
- Blazebound Firestorm casts Roaring Blaze which needs to be interrupted, and Kokia casts Molten Boulder at the same time which needs to be baited in a good direction. Blazebound Firestorm also casts Inferno which deals massive damage so rotate your defensives. Ideally, you can kill it before the second cast of Inferno.
Kyrakka and Erkhart Stormvein
- In Phase 1 Kyrakka targets one random player with Infernocore, use your Blur if you are targetted.
- In Phase 2 Kyrakk starts applying Infernocore to multiple players so you want to nuke her down as quickly as possible, this is a great time to Bloodlust.
Trash Tips
- Melidrussa Chillworn area
- Stop Flashfrost Earthshaper's Tectonic Slam with your Chaos Nova and Sigil of Misery.
- Kokia Blazehoof area
- This area is one of the roughest in all of Mythic+, Blazebound Destroyers cast Inferno and Living Bomb which are extremely deadly. Use Blur if you get Living Bomb.
- Interrupt Primalist Cinderweavers as much as possible and use Chaos Nova and Sigil of Misery to stop Primalist Flamedancers Flame Dance.
- Kyrakka and Erkhart area
- Flame Channelers cast Flashfire which you need to interrupt.
- Tempest Channelers and High Channeler Ryvati both cast Lightning Storm so rotate Blur and Netherwalk.
Affixes
Learn how to effectively handle various Mythic+ Affixes as a Havoc Demon Hunter. Depending on the level of the Mythic+ Dungeon you face up to two additional Affixes alongside Fortified and Tyrannical.
- Entangling
- Use Vengeful Retreat to remove the effect, don't delay it for Entangling as you can also just run or Fel Rush out of it easily.
- Incorporeal
- Use Imprison to stop one from casting.
- Spiteful
- Run away from them, and use Chaos Nova or Sigil of Misery if they get too close.

Higher Item level items are better in most scenarios. For an accurate representation of what item to equip you should use Simcraft! A static "Stat Priority" is just a starting point and can easily shift depending on your individual gear.

Tertiary
- Avoidance - Great stat to reduce the damage intake of "Area of Effect" abilities.
- Leech - Provides additional healing through damage dealing. The damage of your pets does not heal you thus Leech is a great tertiary for you since most of your damage is coming from your own spells.
- Speed - Niche tertiary that can be very useful and has been proven useful in the past. Makes playing certain mechanics a lot easier.

- Blue Silken Lining
- On Cloak, Wrists or Belt.

Honorable mention
- Elemental Lariat
- Good to use if you have access to the maximum amount of gems, and decent in multi target scenarios especially if you're Blue Silken Lining uptime is not great.
Remaining Sparks
- Make sure to apply Alchemical Flavor Pocket if you have an additional crafted item equipped to keep your food buff even if you die.
- Crafted items are 525 item level and regular items are 528 on max item level, therefore, it's not beneficial to equip crafted items outside of your 2x embellishments unless you don't have access to other high item level gear on that slot.

Races
Patch 11.0 - The War Within
Havoc Demon Hunter
For min-maxing a Havoc Demon Hunter in Mythic+, different racial traits can provide a tremendous benefit to your characters. If this is not your top goal, picking a race that fits your style works just as well.
- Shadowmeld -- Nightelf
- Provides nothing, and can be useful in M+ in very niche situations.
- Arcane Torrent -- Bloodelf
- Removes 1 beneficial effect from hostile targets around you.
- Generates 15 Fury.
Recommendation
It does not really matter which Race you chose for Havoc Demon Hunter for DPS, as both provide about the same DPS benefits, it is however advised to go Blood Elf as Arcane Torrent might come in handy in some situations where you need a quick AoE purge You can also use it to gain 15 Fury while you are out of range of any target in combat.
